Integrated Facades

INTEGRATED FACADES - 2012

INTEGRATED FACADES - FALL 2012
INSTRUCTOR: GREG OTTO

ENVELOP DESIGN HAS BECOME A VERY IMPORTANT ASPECT OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN. THIS SEMINAR EXPLORED VARIOUS TECHNOLOGIES, METHODS AND TECHNIQUES INVOLVED IN CONTEMPORARY CUTTING EDGE SCIENCE OF INTEGRATED FACADE SYSTEMS.

THE INSTRUCTOR INTRODUCED TOPICS SUCH AS INDUSTRY STANDARDS, SUSTAINABILITY REQUIREMENTS, AND TRAINED THE CLASS TO USE TOOLS SUCH AS ECOTECT. WE ALSO HAD GUEST SPEAKERS FROM FACADE DESIGNERS AND MANUFACTURERS, ARCHITECTS, PROJECT MANAGERS AND ENGINEERS INFORMING US ABOUT DIFFERENT ASPECTS THAT SHOULD BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN DESIGNING A GOOD FACADE.

THE SEMESTER LONG COURSE WORK REQUIRED RESEARCH OF PRECEDENTS AND PRESENTING A DESIGN PROPOSAL, AND ACCOMPANYING ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS SHOWING THE PERFORMANCE OF THE BUILDING IN AN ASSIGNED SITE LOCATION.

ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS

OBSERVATIONS:

- The site experiences very high temperatures during the months of April - October. Only 4 months out of the year are cooler months.
- The Northwest facades experiences the most amount of solar exposure thus the highest heat gain.
- The Northwest facade experiences the highest solar gains from April to August.
- Southwest experiences the highest solar-gains in the months of September through March.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Based on above observations it can be noted that:

-The building interior ventilation could not depend on the natural ventilation due to the extreme weather conditions of the year. Therefore the ventilation system should be based on efficient AC system.
- North West facade gains a lot of heat during the warmest period of the year. A facade system that filters in the amount of solar heat gain needs to be implemented.
- The South West Facade gains solar heat mostly during the coolest period of the year. The facade needs to include properties that will maximize the heat gain thus reducing the cost of heating in the interior spaces.
