This design proposal for the renovation of LA Coliseum seeks to upgrade the existing space with modern facilities that would attract an NFL team back to Los Angeles. As a comprehensive design studio, the proposal explored the landscape, site context in the city and the Exposition Park area, the long span structural system, & sustainable systems of the design, as well as introduction of another use to the space.
The proposal addresses the programatic requirements of reduction of seating from 90,000 to 65,000 seats through introduction of more spacious Club seating. Additional facilities such as Luxuary Suites, Club Lounges, and modern facilities for the athletes are housed in the new canopy system that adds 1.4 million sq.ft.
As a secondary use, the design proposes integration to the Exposition Park through introduction of Science research facility, a solar farm and a roof-top garden system that is situated on the canopy system.
The Canopy system is made up of nine steel trust "bridges". The longest "bridge" span of the steel truss is 1061 ft.
The concept explores the idea of providing spaces for Sports and Science under one roof; also the idea of city within a city. The users enter at the ground level and goes through the building and enters another higher elevation "Ground".
